Ashley Green: National University Curling Champ

Ashley recently graduated from the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Film and Video Production. Born in Yellowknife, she was an active member of her community growing up and participated in speed skating, skiing, track and field and curling. She excelled in curling, a sport that she began quite young: “My brother began curling when I was five. I would be at the rink watching all the time and it seemed natural for me to join up then, despite my young age.” Ashley continued curling throughout middle school and high school, attending many local, territorial, and national competitions. In 2004, her team won the silver ulu at the Arctic Winter Games in Fort McMurray. In addition to attending northern games, Ashley and her teammates competed three times in the Optimist juvenile curling internationals. After leaving Yellowknife to attend University in Saskatchewan, Ashley continued curling recreationally and at the University level. This past year she represented the University of Regina at the CIS/CCA National University Curling Championships hosted in Edmonton, Alberta, from March 10th to the 14, 2010. Her team placed first, garnering them the title of Team Canada at the 2011 World Universiade Championships in Erzurum, Turkey. Ashley is looking forward to competing at a high performance level with other university students from around the world: “I can’t wait to get to Turkey and represent Team Canada while competing in the sport I love against international students who are equally fired up about curling.”

When not curling, Ashley continues to pursue her passion for film and video production. After completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Ashley accepted a year long internship position through the Northern Graduates program in the Public Affairs division of the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Education, Culture, and Employment. Ashley looks forward to continuing her film work for the government and rising to the challenges that her new position will bring.

In addition to maintaining an active lifestyle and pursuing her dreams, Ashley fosters homeless dogs for the NWTSPCA/Great Slave Animal Hospital.
