Katherine Elkin: Paralympic Torchbearer

The 2010 Paralympic Torch Relay began in Ottawa on March 3, 2010, with a lighting ceremony. One torchbearer from each province and territory was selected to participate in the lighting ceremony, and Katherine Elkin of Yellowknife was selected as the torchbearer for the Northwest Territories. Katherine, a first year University of Calgary student, was selected based on her performance at various para-swim events, and for her well-rounded and balanced interests.

During the 2008-2009 swimming season, she represented the Northwest Territories at the Canada Summer Games in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (4th place in 100 meter butterfly and 5th place in 200 meter individual medley); the Alberta Senior Championships in Medicine Hat (Bronze in the 100 free); and at defi sportif in Montreal (bronze in 50 meter freestyle).

Katherine is also a musician, dancer, performer and honour role student. She has appeared in numerous local productions, musical presentations and concerts in Yellowknife. She was also a volunteer coach with the Northwest Territories Special Olympics swim team when she was attending high school in Yellowknife.
