Justice and the Law
The Residential Tenancies Act is changing on September 1. If you’re a tenant or a landlord, these changes will affect you.
Some of the more important changes are:
- A new tenancy agreement form is in the regulations.
- If pets are allowed in the unit, the landlord can require new tenants to pay a pet security deposit.
- If the landlord wants to make a claim against the security deposit or the pet security deposit, entry and exit inspections will be required on tenancy agreements entered into after September 1, 2010.
- Landlords have to inspect the rental premises and prepare a written inspection report at the beginning of the tenancy and at the end.
- If a tenant is breaking the law in the rental unit or complex, the landlord can ask the rental officer to end the tenancy.
- The rental officer can issue an order evicting a tenant.
We have new forms and information for landlords and tenants. If you’d like a copy of the new forms, booklet, fact sheets, or more detailed information on the changes, go to the rental office in Yellowknife (3rd floor, YK Centre East), call us ((867) 920-8047), or download it from our website.
